Salt, Leaven, and Honey

November 23, 2019

[Salt, leaven and honey are all mentioned as foods required or forbidden on Yahweh's altar of sacrifice. These foods are used as symbols for human actions as well, so let us see what that thought brings forth.]

(Exo 12:15-17 KJV) Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. 12:16 And in the first day there shall be a Set-apart convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be a Set-apart convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.12:17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever.

[The bread was unleavened because they left in haste. There was no time to wait for the flour to become impregnated with the wild yeast that floats in the air.]

(Mat 16:5-12 KJV) And when His disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 16:6 Then YAHSHUA said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.16:7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 16:8 Which when YAHSHUA perceived, He said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 16:9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 16:10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?16:11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 16:12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

(1Co 5:6-8 KJV)  Your boasting is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Messiah our Passover is sacrificed for us: 5:8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

[They were brought out of Egypt in haste, leaving no time for them to bring with them the idols of Egypt. Still we see they still yearned for those things of Egypt. Yahshua equated leaven with false teachings and that is what we bring with us when we begin to follow Yahweh. This walk, especially in the early days, is a walk of shedding the false and putting on the real deal, salvation through repentance and acceptance of Yahshua's blood sacrifice to cover those repented sins. If we would walk daily in the presence of Yahweh we must do so with Yahshua's covering so we can hear the Father clearly. Are you willing to shed the old teachings that do not agree with scriptures? They perhaps seem harmless, but they are not according to how Yahweh has revealed He will accept as worship, therefore if they do not please Him why would you continue to walk in them? To please self, family, social acceptance, etc.? We are warned to neither add nor take away from the scriptures, changing the form of worship, dates of worship, etc. is that not changing the scriptures, at least in how you practice them?]

(Lev 2:11-12 KJV) No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto YAHWEH, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of YAHWEH made by fire. 2:12 As for the oblation of the first fruits, ye shall offer them unto the YAHWEH: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for a sweet savour.

(Pro 5:1-6 KJV) My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: 5:2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. 5:3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: 5:4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword. 5:5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. 5:6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are movable, that thou canst not know them.

(Pro 25:16-17 BBE) If you have honey, take only as much as is enough for you; for fear that, being full of it, you may not be able to keep it down.

25:27 It is not good to take much honey: so he who is not looking for honour will be honoured.

[Why are leaven and honey forbidden as part of the burnt offering? Neither was acquired by the sweat of their brows. It was on a par with offering wild game since neither require a loss of an asset, but were simply gathered from Yahweh's natural resources. The burnt offerings were sin offerings so they need to cost us something!

Honey is equated with sexual sin, the lips of a strange woman. They may entice, but if the lure is answered there will be strife, just as eating to many sweets gives a sour stomach indulging in any sin leads to disease of the spirit as well as the body.

There is also the idea that when we build up our selves it is like applying honey, and will eventually bring the sting when the ants are attracted.]

(Lev 2:13 KJV) And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy Almighty to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

(Mat 5:13 KJV) Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

(Mar 9:49-50 KJV) For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. 9:50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltiness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

[Salt is necessary to life, without it we would dry up and blow away. Salt also preserves food for future use.

Salt is also a cleanser. It used to be used to prevent infections and to clear them up.

Symbolically then the salt put upon the burnt offerings may be a cleanser for those sins being covered.

Salt is also used as a seasoning without which even sweet things do not reach their full potential.

The message we have been given to proclaim to the nations must be free of man's teachings, true to scriptures – thus unleavened.

We must also offer it [the good news] in love, which is the honey, but not so wrapped in heavenly promises that it is no earthly good.

Ah! for a pure salt. Salt that heals from the past and protects from future leavening. Salt that brings forth the sweet savor of His love for His children. That salt is Torah!]
