[We are commanded to afflict our soul today, and that means to take mastery over our fleshly desires. Food is a necessity but we can go days without eating and suffer no permanent harm. Fasting shows us we can control our fleshier desires.]
(Zec 8:18-19 KJV) And the word of Yahweh of hosts came unto me, saying, 8:19 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, …...
[What do these four fasts commemorate?]
(2Ki 25:1-3 KJV) And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about. 25:2 And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. 25:3 And on the ninth day of the fourth month the famine prevailed in the city, and there was no bread for the people of the land.

2 Kings 25:1 am 3414, B.C. 590 in the ninth: This according to the computation of Archbishop Usher, was on Thursday, January 30th, am 3414, which was a sabbatical year; wherein they proclaimed liberty to their servants, according to the law, but soon enthralled [enslaved] them again (see Jer_34:8-10). 2Ch_36:17-21; Jer_34:2, Jer_34:3-6, Jer_39:1-10, Jer_52:4, Jer_52:5-11; Eze_24:1, Eze_24:2-14 From TSK Cross Reference
(Jer 34:8-17 KJV) This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from Yahweh, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which were at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them; 34:9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Jew his brother. 34:10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one should let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go. 34:11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids. 34:12 Therefore the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 34:13 Thus saith Yahweh, the Almighty of Israel; I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying, 34:14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto Me, neither inclined their ear. 34:15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in My sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before Me in the house which is called by My name: 34:16 But ye turned and polluted My name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. 34:17 Therefore thus saith Yahweh; Ye have not hearkened unto Me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith Yahweh, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.
[They lost their freedom because they refused to obey the Torah’s basis, freedom for all of Yahweh‘s people. Their forefathers first agreed, and each succeeding generation also agreed, to the ban on enslavement of each other for more than 6 years, marking any unpaid balance on the original debt paid in full, and full freedom given at the beginning of the 7th year. Their continued failure to set their brothers free is one of the sins that caused this enslavement in Babylon, and added to this sin is the continued sin of idolatry.]
(Jer 52:12-14 KJV) Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, which served the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem, 52:13 And burned the house of Yahweh, and the king's house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the houses of the great men, burned he with fire: 52:14 And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about.

“Jeremiah 52:12 fifth: 2Ki_25:8; Zec_7:3-5, Zec_8:19
the tenth: It appears from the parallel passage of Kings, that Nebuzar-adan came from Riblah to Jerusalem on the seventh of the fifth month; but it seems that he did not set fire to the temple and city till the tenth day, being probably occupied on the intervening days in taking the vessels out of the house of the Lord, and collecting together all the riches that could be found. In memory of this calamity, the Jews devote two fasts to this day; the seventeenth of the fourth month, which falls in June, for the destruction of Jerusalem, and the ninth of the fifth month, which falls in July, for the destruction of the temple; both of which are mentioned by Zechariah as kept from this event till his time, a period of seventy years, under the names of the fast of the fourth month, and fast of the fifth month.”
[These fasts are secular in that Yahweh did not command them, they were established to remind the people of the punishment for blatant, continued disobedience to Yahweh’s Torah, and they were established by mankind.]
(Jer 40:13-16 KJV) Moreover Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields, came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, 40:14 And said unto him, Dost thou certainly know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites hath sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to slay thee? But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam believed them not. 40:15 Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he slay thee, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant in Judah perish? 40:16 But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.
(2Ki 25:23-26 KJV) And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 25:24 And Gedaliah sware to them, and to their men, and said unto them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; and it shall be well with you. 25:25 But it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, came, and ten men with him, and smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews and the Chaldees that were with him at Mizpah. 25:26 And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees.

the seventh month: This was the month Tisri answering to the new moon of September, the seventh of the sacred, but the first of the civil year; on the third day of which the Jews keep a fast, in commemoration of the death of Gedaliah, to which the prophet Zechariah refers, Zec_8:19; Jer_39:2, Jer_52:6. 2Ki_25:3, 2Ki_25:8, 2Ki_25:25. Zec_7:5; Zec_8:19.
[Here again they have a great evil, the shedding of innocent blood. Yahweh had sent word through His prophets that the people were to obey the Chaldeans and serve their time because they had not given the land its rest.
Gedaliah was doing as Yahweh instructed, therefore his was innocent blood which was a final defilement of the land and brought about the removal of the rest of Judah from Israel.
Israel is still suffering under the punishment for these crimes and they still keep these fasts. So if you are looking for a reason to fast for our nation how about fasting on the anniversary of the following:
When the Supreme Court passed a law stating we are no longer a nation under the rule and authority of Yahweh:
When that court declared prayer and the 10 Commandments should no longer be a part of our legal system nor our school system.
When that same court declared abortion to be a right of a woman over her body.
When that same court declared a viable child could be killed at birth.
As we come before Yahweh today these are sins of this nation we should be weeping over. I am sure there are many others, but these speak of national sins for we have never overturned these laws. So today let us add our voices to those that cry against those in high places who have a hand in such evils, and repent if we have not added our support in overturning them.]
(Jer 52:1-9 KJV) Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 52:2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of Yahweh, according to all that Jehoiakim had done. 52:3 For through the anger of Yahweh it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, till he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. 52:4 And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about. 52:5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. 52:6 And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land. 52:7 Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain. 52:8 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him. 52:9 Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath; where he gave judgment upon him.
[The following is a quote from John Gill’s commentary.]
“and the fast of the tenth; the month Tebet; which answers to December, on the tenth day of which the city of Jerusalem was besieged by Nebuchadnezzar; and this fast was kept on that account, Jer_52:4 “
[All four of these fasts are secular in that Yahweh commanded none of them, they are mankind’s invention. It seems they intended these fasts to remind the people the high price of dishonoring a covenant with Yahweh, with the hope of bringing them to a state of repentance thus avoiding any future calamities. History shows these fasts failed to change the hearts of the people, even when kept with tear filled eyes. What I have failed to point out in the beginning is they were being punished in the beginning for failing to honor the land sabbath commanded in Lev. 25.2 and followed in Lev. 26.34-35 by a warning for failure to do so. That degree was given in 2Chr. 36.21. But Yahweh is good and when He mentioned these 4 fasts He followed up with promises for the obedient.]
(Zec 8:1-8 KJV) Again the word of Yahweh of hosts came to me, saying, 8:2 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; I was jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I was jealous for her with great fury. 8:3 Thus saith Yahweh; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of Yahweh of hosts the set-apart mountain. 8:4 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. 8:5 And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. 8:6 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in Mine eyes? saith Yahweh of hosts. 8:7 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; Behold, I will save My people from the east country, and from the west country; 8:8 And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be My people, and I will be their Almighty, in truth and in righteousness.
[We have the people returning to a country called by its proper name, Israel.]
(Zec 8:9-17 KJV) Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of Yahweh of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. 8:10 For before these days there was no hire for man, nor any hire for beast; neither was there any peace to him that went out or came in because of the affliction: for I set all men every one against his neighbour. 8:11 But now I will not be unto the residue of this people as in the former days, saith Yahweh of hosts. 8:12 For the seed shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase, and the heavens shall give their dew; and I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. 8:13 And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong. 8:14 For thus saith Yahweh of hosts; As I thought to punish you, when your fathers provoked me to wrath, saith Yahweh of hosts, and I repented not: 8:15 So again have I thought in these days to do well unto Jerusalem and to the house of Judah: fear ye not. 8:16 These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:
8:17 And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith Yahweh.
[If we want the blessings we must walk in the truth of Yahweh spelled out in all of scripture.]
(Zec 8:18-23 KJV) And the word of Yahweh of hosts came unto me, saying, 8:19 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace. 8:20 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: 8:21 And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before Yahweh, and to seek Yahweh of hosts: I will go also. 8:22 Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek Yahweh of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before Yahweh. 8:23 Thus saith Yahweh of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that Almighty is with you.
[Even now, for the last 80 to 100 years more and more people are studying all of scripture and striving to bring their lives into agreement with Torah. These people are often looked at as members or leaders of cults, fanatics, crazy, Jewish want-a-be s. Do not let the name calling deter you from this walk, but let it encourage you to walk a truer path so those who oppose will come to be those who admire, if not your walk at least your grit and loyalty to Yahweh’s word.]
